Juggling time between two active bands is no small thing. Yet, Corey Taylor seems to be pulling it off very well, much to the surprise of critics.
Stone Sour is a hard rock band formed by Corey Taylor and Joel Ekman. Corey Taylor is also the lead vocalist for the band Slipknot. But Stone Sour started out before Slipknot did. Stone Sour actually started out in 1992, whereas Slipknot started out in 1995. The choice of name actually comes from an alcoholic beverage of the same name.
Corey Taylor and Joel Ekman were the main forerunners for Stone Sour, as vocalist and drummer respectively. Shawn Economaki then joined as bassist for the band. The band gained exposure by playing at various bars and clubs, and was able to make two demo tapes for 1992 and 1994. In 1995, James Root joined Stone Sour as well. With a complete lineup, the band recorded another demo tape in 1996. Some songs from this demo tape were then used in the self-titled debut album in 2002.
But in 1997, Stone Sour disbanded when an opportunity to join Slipknot presented itself. Taylor, Root, and Economaki decided to join the starting band from Iowa. Co-founder Ekman decided to build a family of his own.
In 2000, Josh Rand brought Corey Taylor's attention to some material he had written. The two began making songs while on tour with Slipknot. A year and a half later, these songs caught the eye of record label RoadRunner. This was when Stone Sour became active once again, and used the songs Taylor and Rand had made for their self-titled album. Their song Bother was included in the Spider-Man soundtrack, and led to eben more exposure for the band. Their self-titled album went on to hit Gold status.
After which, the band went on hiatus once again while Taylor and Root worked with Slipknot's next album and tour. But during the Subliminal Verses tour with Slipknot, Rand and Taylor began working on songs for Stone Sour's sophomore album. Co-founder Joel Ekman was active in recording songs for the 2nd installment. But family problems snagged him away from the band once again. He was soon replaced by Roy Mayorga of the band Soulfly. The hard work paid off and their album Come What(ever) May was released on August 1, 2006. The album peaked at the 4th spot on the Billboard 200 chart.
The 2nd single Stone Sour throught the glass garnered attention to the band. Throughout 2006, Stone Sour throught the glass took the top spots of the charts. In fact, Stone Sour though glass took #1 and #2 spots on the Mainstream Rock and Modern Rock charts respectively. In 2007, Stone Sour though glass debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The Stone Sourthrough glass track took 39th place. On the Pop 100 chart, Stone Sourthrough glass also took 33rd place.
A common observation fans worldwide about Stone Sour glass is that it's a very angry track. And vocals Corey Taylor is pleased with this. Taylor reveals that Stone Sour glass is indeed supposed to be an angry track. Taylor further reveals that the Stone Sourthrough the glass track has a more personal tone of his own.
There was a time when Taylor was very dissatisfied with the way the music industry was going. He felt more importance was given to the band's clothes and stage antics, rather than the songs themselves. And this anger was channeled to the Stone Sourthrough the glass track.
Taylor also feels that fans these days are more inclined to American Idol-type performances. This makes it harder for bands to perform hardcore rock because of the preference of most fans. This hardship prodded Taylor to compose Stone SourThrough Glass. His opinions are clearly expressed in looking through the glass Stone Sour.
Stone Sour looking at you through the glass is doing well on the charts, both locally and internationally. Stone Sour through glass even hit the music charts in Poland and Germany.
