The ska-pop sound of No Doubt has been a major part of the music scene beginning the late 90's. With chart-topping hits beginning with No Doubt don't speak, No Doubt web, No Doubt just a girl, and No Doubt sunday morning, the band became a forerunner for the ska-pop subgenre.
Although the band has been active since 1986, it was their No Doubt tragic kingdom album in 1995 that turned the tables for them. The No Doubt tragic kingdom album chronicles the failed relationship of Gwen Stefani and Tony Kanal. The nature of the tracks on No Doubt tragic kingdom can certainly attest to that.
The track No Doubt don't speak in particular is one of the products of the failed relationship. In fact, No Doubt don't speak is the major product of the fallout. Apparently, Tony Kanal of don't speak No Doubt fell out of love with Gwen Stefani. Tony Kanal of don't speak No Doubt decided to be honest with Stefani about this. Stefani then went into a short period of depression.
This period led to Stefani composing the ballad don't speak No Doubt. Her brother Eric Stefani also helped Gwen compose the lyrics and music to No Doubt dont speak. After a series of No Doubt dont speak versions, they finally came up with the final one come late 1996. Matthew Wilder then produced the No Doubt dont speak track. Here's a little piece of trivia on dont speak No Doubt. Stefani reveals that dont speak No Doubt was meant to have some sugary feel to it. At the last minute, dont speak No Doubt was given a darker feel, instead of the original plan. The No Doubt mp3 of Don't Speak stayed at the top the airplay charts for 16 straight weeks. The track that beat No Doubt mp3 out of the top spot is Iris, from the film City of Angels. But you just can't discount the long stay of the No Doubt mp3.
Another strong track off Tragic Kingdom is its carrier single No Doubt just a girl. With Gwen coming up with the No Doubt just a girl title, the track went as high as 23rd place on the Billboard Hot 100. Just A Girl was also featured on a couple of movies, one of which is Clueless.
Following the success of Just A Girl are No Doubt web and No Doubt sunday morning. Both tracks did well on the US Billboard charts! For starters, No Doubt web maxed out at 5th on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks, while No Doubt sunday morning even penetrated the Swedish Top 60 chart!
In 2001, the band released the album Rock Steady, with the tracks No Doubt hey baby and No Doubt underneath it all. Aside from the usual ska influences, No Doubt hey baby also has dancehall influences. This move paid off with No Doubt hey baby taking the 5th place on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. But that's not all hey baby No Doubt did. In fact, hey baby No Doubt bagged an award for the band. The Grammy award hey baby No Doubt won is Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal for 2003.
The following year, No Doubt won the same Grammy award again! This time, it's for No Doubt underneath it all. Stefani reveals that she wrote No Doubt underneath it all during a visit to her then-boyfriend-turned-husband Gavin Rossdale.
The band also delved into doing covers, namely a cover of Talk Talk's No Doubt its my life. The original of the No Doubt its my life cover goes way back 1984. But the No Doubt its my life cover did the track justice.
The it's my life No Doubt cover appears on the band's compilation album. Upon the release of it's my life No Doubt, the cover peaked at #10 on the US Hot 100 chart. And it's my life No Doubt stayed on that spot for a long 28 weeks!
The music video of No Doubt it's my life also contributes to its success. The concept of a 1930's setting for the No Doubt it's my life video comes from director David LaChapelle. This paid off as well for the No Doubt it's my life video won the Best Pop Video on the 2004 MTV VMAs.
The band then took a hiatus as Stefani ventured into her successful solo career. But talks of a new No Doubt album have surfaced, and Stefani reveals that the rumors are true! Stefani confirms that the band has plans of working on a reunion album next year. It may indeed be a long wait. But the album will surely be worth the wait any day!
