The Fray Save A Life BraceletHe hates crowds but an extraordinary loss of a son pushed him to make his way through the group of 20-somethings at bars and concerts handing out blue bracelets stenciled with the words ?Save a Life.?
David Fahrenkamp is not someone you would expect to hang around with a budding rock band called The Fray. A 53-year old lawyer in jeans and black long sleeved shirt you would not expect to see weaving his way through a crowd of concert-goers.
It started 10 months ago when David lost his son, Colin Fahrenkamp, in a car accident on January 20, 2006. That night before he left, the last song he downloaded on his computer was "How to Save a Life" the fray mp3 by music group called the fray.
Colin had been driving his Chevy Trailblazer on Highway 40 near Clayton Road
when it abruptly swerved. As it bounced off a metal guardrail, Colin was thrown
from the driver's side window. He landed on the median and died.
David is here for the memory of his dead son, for the unlikely friendship that death sparked with how to save lives, the fray, and to push his ?Save A Life? movement to have young people make smart choices.
The Save a Life Campaign consists of a website carrying lyrics to how to save a life by the fray and the fray wallpaper with a broad mission of trying to influence young people to make decisions How to save lives, the fray that will save their lives and the lives of others. Because of a link on the music group called the fray website, www.savealifecampaign.com gets about 1,200 hits a day, and people all over the
world have sent e-mails.
?After Colin?s death, we started hearing stories from his friends about how he quietly performed small acts of courage which saved their lives, the lives of friends, and the lives of their siblings,? David shared.
He never sought recognition. He never did these things to be popular. He did hard things because they were right, not because he wanted to be a hero. We want to follow Colin's example. The lives we can save are our children's, our friend's, and our own.
About 2,000 people came to the wake, many sharing tales about how the star
soccer player at Chaminade College Preparatory School and at St. Louis Community College at Meramec touched their lives.
There was the girl he talked into getting help for a friend who overdosed on
drugs. Stories about how Colin picked up friends running away from home and
made sure they had a place to stay for the night.
The fray save a life was the last entry on Colin?s computer. It is a plaintive ballad inspired by lead singer Isaac Slade's experience with mentoring a troubled teen.
A few months after Colin?s death, the Fahrenkamps corresponded with the music group called the fray by e-mail. In July, they met the music group called the fray after the band played a show at a Clayton club.
Over time, the relationship evolved. Every so often, the band dedicated free mp3 how to save a life the fray to Colin during concerts.
He approaches a tall blonde woman and hands her a blue bracelet. She looks quizzically at the gift, stenciled with the words "Save a Life."
"The band wears them," he says. "Look at the website."
"Wow," she says. "Thanks."
Finally, the Fray's encore arrives, and with it the song that means so much to
the Fahrenkamps.
"This is for Colin." David and Fritz put a hand in the air, as the fray mp3 "How to Save a Life" plays.
When it's over, Fritz wipes away tears as the lyrics for the fray consumed him pushing him more to persist with the fray save a life campaign.
And as they walk out into the night, many of the music group called the fray fans are sporting blue bracelets. |
