?I thought about how there's no way you can actually do that in real life. There's no formula to saving someone. So that idea was cooking in my brain,? lead vocals Isaac Slade shared.

Slade shared that although he didn?t like the influence, there?s no way to escape it. He pointed out some good things about the influence though such as dedicating the minutes of your song towards a good thing, a good purpose.

Before signing with Epic Records in 2004, The Fray earned a loyal grassroots following through touring and the support of local radio, which led a listener-driven campaign to get the band a record contract.

It was that strong word-of-mouth support from fans that helped The Fray win "Best New Band" honors from Westword magazine and fan requests that opened the door to them on Denver's rock radio stations. The demo version of their now breakthrough hit single, over my head fray mp3 became KTCL-FM's Top 30 most played song of 2004 in just four months and soon other radio stations jumped on the song.

"We actually have a LOT of different influences," noted Welsh when speaking of The Fray's music. "I think everybody in the band has a very unique sound to them and unique taste in the music that they listen to. I'm big into the alt-country thing, like Wilco, Ryan Adams and The Jayhawks."

While all four members have a hand in the creative process, Welsh acknowledged that King and Slade are the group's main songwriters. "They'll hole themselves up in a room somewhere and write a few songs and then bring them to Ben and me (for our input)."

The Fray is composed of Joe and Isaac as the group?s main songwriters, drummer Ben Wysocki and guitarist Dave Welsh.
